Sports in May

Strasbourg’s Centre Sportif  hosts the Women’s Tennis Championship Series III Internationaux de Strasbourg, the second-biggest women’s tennis championship in France. Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf and Jennifer Capriati have all played here.

The event is a chance to check out new names in the sport as well as to see some big-hitters in action on the courts ahead of the French Open – you have a chance to do so until the 21^st of May!

The relentless International North West 200 road race returns on the 21st of May 2011! Ireland’s largest outdoor sporting event draws more than 150,000 spectators who will line the roads between Portrush, Portstewart and Coleraine to watch the bikes racing past.

The whole week takes on a festival atmosphere with concerts and other entertainment and you can join in until the following sunday, the 22^nd.  Stay in touch via Facebook or check exact timetables via their website.

Culinary Happenings this Month

Paris’ t is the setting for the annual French Wine Fair. Professionals and enthusiasts gather over two days to sample the country’s best wines and some 200 winemakers attend. Sounds like your attendance is required – if you happen to be around that area, make sure you pop in for some yummy reds or tangy whiteys!

France is rocking another delicious happening : Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne celebrates its Strawberry Festival with a village-wide street party on May 15^th. Stalls sell local delicacies as well as, naturally, heaps of strawberries but the big draw is the baking of an enormous strawberry tart, demolished by festival-goers as soon as it is completed. Sounds fun!

Perfect with these events: One Summer Radio from France. Electronics, Urban Music and Trip Hop will get you in a good mood for some fun outdoor activities.

The Royal Wedding 2011

On Friday the 29^th of April, Prince William married Catherine Middleton at Westminster Abbey. Wow. This truely is a bit of a fairytale and we’re still teary-eyed. It also is a huge media happening, of course. There was the official website. Then there was a Twitter account. (Follow @clarencehouse for the latest breaking news on honeymoon plans and events) There is also is a Flickr site for all images from the big day… Social Media has arrived in the Royal Family, it appears.

The wedding of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton was available to watch on the Royal Channel Live Stream, accompanied by a live multi-media blog put together by St. James’s Palace which you will both find on the website

Music News in April: Katy Perry, Stevie Wonder and more

Wow. Spring is already getting to people. We have a bit of amazing gossip for you:

Calvin Harris and Katy Perry reportedly had a bit of a fight on Twitter. Calvin’s tweet said “Sorry to all who wanted to see me with Katy – her team suddenly moved the goalposts, and i was to appear on stage with no production. Trust me you would have been more disappointed SEEING the show than u are with me cancelling.”

Katy then tweeted @CalvinHarris “funny the goal post seems to be perfectly fine for New Young Pony Club, Yelle, Robyn, Marina & The Diamonds to name a few. or how bout Janell Monae and her 16 piece band… Etc… it’s fine, I’m used to you cancelling on me, it’s become ur staple!”

Also Robbie Williams seemed to be in cancellation mode. He was meant to appear on the UK’s version of the X-Factor but reportedly turned down the offer. Simon Cowell was thought to have offered the Take That star a multi million pound deal, to join the judging panel of the TV talent show alongside Louis Walsh and Dannii Minogue. Apparently Robbie is not in need of any dough…

Meanwhile Stevie Wonder has admitted that he would love to join the lineup of Simon Cowell’s new X Factor panel in the US. Reportedly he said “Simon should give me a buzz. I love X Factor and to be a judge would be great. Seeking out for new talent? I have an ear for it.”

One of the really good ones is Globespotters by the NYTimes. With themes like the gentrification of Mumbai’s western sea front and its vast swath of the resident flamingos or the London Antiques Fair in Chelsea… their reporters are all spread all over the world, bringing the coolest events straight to you via their blog.

Another classic: Lonely Planet! This Travel Guide has been an inspiration for people for many, many years. They document various things… the picnic culture in Turkey, recommendations for first-timers that travel to Hawaii or Tattoo-tourism all over the world.

If you’re someone who prefers a trip to be planned out to the core, this is the perfect website for you. You can also go to your local book shop and purchase the Lonely Planet Hardcover books.

Formula One: Australian Grand Prix

Formula One motorsport comes to the Grand Prix Circuit by Albert Park in Melbourne. As many as 300,000 fans come to watch the practice and build-up to Sunday’s race from the 24^th til the 27^th of March.

The next few stops of the Formula One truck are Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia from the 8^th until the 10^th of April, Shanghai, Turkey and Spain. If you fancy taking part, make sure you book your tickets now!

And here’s a few last minute  news for you: McLaren are hoping that last-minute upgrades to their 2011 car will bring an improvement of up to one second per lap at this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

Lotus have announced Karun Chandhok is to join the team as reserve driver for the 2011 season. Chandhok, who made 10 Grands Prix starts last year for HRT, will make his first appearance for Lotus this weekend during Friday’s practice session for the Australian Grand Prix.

South by Southwest 2011 Recap

The SXSW® Music and Media Conference has just celebrated its 25th Anniversary. What this is? South by Southwest showcases hundreds of gigs and bands from around the globe on over eighty stages in downtown Austin, Texas, USA.

There were also movie screenings, exhibitions, trade shows and panel discussions for the industry crowd.

To put it in simple words: This conference looks out for all those great new acts that will be on Hot Rotation next year!

The highlights of this year’s conference were The Foo Fighters’ secret act, Jack White, Erykah Badu, the Wu Tang Clan as well as James Blake plus hundreds and hundreds of other newbies that played venues all around Austin.

The great thing about it is: people like you and me can also get in on the action and purchase a ticket. The only downside to it: you will have to wait a full year!

Paul McCartney Composes Work for New York City Ballet

These news have just hit the headlines: In an unexpected intersection of celebrity pop music and ballet — that most refined of the performing arts Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney has written a major orchestral work for the New York City Ballet. It is a love story titled “Ocean’s Kingdom” and will have its premiere in September.

He is not just the most successful songwriter in the history of popular music. McCartney is a multiple Grammy Award- and Academy Award-winning English singer-songwriter, poet, composer, multi-instrumentalist, entrepreneur, record producer, film producer, painter, and animal rights and peace activist. No surprise then he’s off to write for the Ballet now. He gained worldwide fame as a member of The Beatles, alongside John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, but surely we don’t need to tell you this. Check out all news on his website.

Music News in February

Sad news first: The White Stripes have split! After 13 years of Jack and Meg White aka The White Stripes, they announced on February 2^nd that they are officially disbanding – but putting an emphasis on the fact that ‘it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created’. Nothing is lost! Check out their official statement via their website.

For last weeks SuperBowl, the NFL has returned to edgy pop music again with this year’s halftime act the Black Eyed Peas. They delivered an eye-popping spectacle worthy of the Bowl’s status as most watched Television Event of the Year. Did you happen to watch it?

Oh and have you heard? It seems Britney Spears has decided to retake the title of Pop Queen this year – and we now have the demo of her first single for 2011, Hold It Against Me. You can check it out here.

It’s got a bit more dubstep in than we’re used to with Britney – and the beat really gets heavy in the end. Still – we like the new direction she’s going in.

We’re pretty sure 2011 will hold many surprises when it comes to new music, we’re already off to a great start!
