Grammies & BAFTA 2011

This Sunday is Grammy time! The 53^rd Grammy Awards will take place on 13^th of February 2011 at the Staples Center in L.A. This extremely sought after prize recognizes outstanding achievement in the music industry and it will be broadcast by CBS.

Rumour has it, that Gwyneth Paltrow will be singing a Country Song together with Cee Lo Green at the Award Ceremony. We’re not entirely sure about her being a singer now, but apparently she can keep up with her famous husband Chris Martin of Coldplay.

And here it comes: Mick Jagger will be performing for the first time at the Grammys, too! Other than that, you can expect performances by Eminem, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire and Katy Perry. Quite a nice line-up!

Also just around the corner: the BAFTAS. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is the UK’s leading independent charity working with the film, television and video games industries and yes, they do have their own award.

This year’s celebration of the very best in film will take place on Sunday 13 February at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden and will also be broadcast via BBC 1 and BBC 3.

Catch up on Sport via STREAMIUM

This month is jam packed with sports events: we have the Australian Open going on until the 30^th of January, the US Figure Skating Championshi ps from the 22 – 30 Jan 2011 in North Carolina, US as well as the Winter X Games!

The game, to be played on February 6^th in Arlington, Texas, will pit the AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers against the NFC champion Green Bay Packers to decide the NFL champion for the 2010 season. All eyes on Super Bowl!

Happy New Year from your STREAMIUM Team!

It has been a fantastic year with you guys! We’re all a little sentimental that its all over now, but there are great things to come next year!

It has been a pleasure looking for the coolest stations all over the world, the best albums that came out, checking out festivals, tours and events for you! We really hope you enjoyed the coverage of things we gave you.

We’d really like to thank all our readers & followers and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do an ‘Streamium around the world’ post.

Let’s start with Australasia, we’d like to introduce Matariki FM, located on Cook Islands. Although Matariki FM is predominantly and parochially native, its magazine style format is bilingual; that is the Rarotonga Cook Islands Maori language and English.

From Asia with love: Hamara-Sangeet Radio from India is, as they say, the best online station for Indian songs. Here you will find soothing music which will touch your heart.

Moving over to Africa: Contact FM from Kigali, Rwanda plays mainly world music, but also discusses political issues.

Now we’re poppin over to Europe. Stockholm, Sweden to be exact. Hit FM offers you a pleasant, danceable & energetic mix of the best dance, euro, disco, techno, club and house tunes with a smile and a few cool jams thrown in. They’ve been doing their job since 1988, so they know what their doing!

911 Groovy Radio from San José, Costa Rica, is probably Central Americas hippest station. These guys will deliver Hip Hop and Indie-Electro like they mean it. For all native Spanish speakers amongst you - check out their website too! It does have a great design but unfortunately, we are not able to read Spanish

South America is bringing Radio Panamericana to you, broadcast from La Paz, Bolivia. They do a very wild mix of Latin, Pop and other genres. Worth checking out!

For stations from North America, we’d like to concentrate on the Caribbean. 88Rockkorsou from Willemstad is a very young format that offers a full spectrum far bigger than only rock music: RnB, Hip-Hop, Rap, Soul, Pop – you name it!

A crew of young DJ’s guarantee the consistent dynamic approach, of course, guided by the experience of the older part of the family, who really know what radio is all about…

Music News of the Week – November 22-28

So what’s been happening in the Music Biz?

Rock musician Patti Smith won the National Book Award for nonfiction last Wednesday night for “Just Kids,” a sweetly evocative memoir of her relationship with the artist Robert Mapplethorpe and life in the bohemian New York of the 1960s and ’70s.

Jim Morrisson, legendary front man of the Doors, has been let off the hook for a conviction that happened more than 40 years ago. The governor of Florida says he will seek to put an end to it by pursuing a posthumous pardon for two criminal convictions that Morrison received after some very bad behavior at a 1969 concert in Miami.

Beatles fans can now download the Fab Four’s music online thanks to a new deal between EMI and Apple after years of negotiation. The record label and iTunes operator announced that the Liverpool quartet’s 13 studio albums will be available on iTunes, along with the two-volume Past Masters compilation and the Red and Blue collections.

For a small fix of 60’s music, check out Beatles-A-Rama, a very fine station completely dedicated to the Beatles with their own Facebook group and Twitter account. Requests can be made easily, just give em a tweet!

A Streamium Thanksgiving!

With Thanksgiving coming up, you need to stock up on a few essential basics. A good wine, a bottle of supreme olive oil.

To get an overview of great wines, we recommend you visit the Bangkok International Wine Fair. Spicy, fruity, tangy wine flavours from around the world dance on your tongue at this great event. Small and boutique wine producers connect with distributors in Thailand and South East Asia – this is the perfect opportunity to choose a great wine for all upcoming festivities.

For a great tasting olive oil, check out the Olive and Olive Oil Festival (19^th – 21^st) in Baena, Spain. Located in Andalusia, Baena is famous for its wonderful olives and olive oil based products. It is called the capital of olives and if you happen to be down there, you will be able to participate in tastings, watch how olive oil is extracted, and find out what can be prepared from olives. Delicious!

MUSIC NEWS: The Month of November

Guess who’s back? SADE – with a new album and an extensive 2011 tour in her bag, she’s set to wow all her fans from back in the day. Tickets already went on sale this month so if you fancy catchin a glimpse on the gorgeous lady, you better get moving!

Also Mr. Leonard Cohen is doing New Zealand, Australia and the US throughout November and December, presenting his brand new album ‘Songs from the Road’ to his enthusiastic community of fans.

Another name to reminisce over: A-HA! Those fellas decided to get their act together and bust out with a new album and tour. You can catch ‘em this month in Ukraine, Lithuania, Russia, the UK and in Norway.

Also coming out soon: James Blunt returns with new album ‘Some Kind of Trouble’ in November. It is his third studio album and also the follow-up to his 2007 opus ‘All The Lost Souls’.

Critics say it’s a more optimistic album than before, Blunt’s 70s style folk-pop songwriting muse is in full flow and a tour is announced for next spring. We’ll keep you informed about all things new with James.

GENERAL NEWS: Gardening Season is on with a little help by STREAMIUM

For those of you who are lucky enough to have a garden or even just a small patio or balcony with a few flowerpots: the gardening season is in full bloom!

According to Harvard naturalist and Pulitzer Prize winner Edward O. Wilson, Nature holds the key to health. He also invented the term biophilia, which means ‘love of living things’ As a matter of fact, gardening is relaxing and will most likely improve your longevity and health. Being surrounded by nature can lower blood pressure, boost immune function, and reduce stress.

NEWS OF THE WEEK: Ban the Vuvuzela?

Have you been noticing the funny noise which has been described ‘like a buzzing swarm of bees’ when watching the FIFA World Cup Games? Well, it would be a little worrying if you haven’t cos the Vuvuzelas have been quite an annoyance ever since the World Cup 2010 started. The Vuvuzela is a plastic trumpet that is also known as a stadium horn and it is an integral part of an African football supporters match day kit. It has been critizised by players, managers and commentators alike, who have all found it very disturbing as it interferes with the communication on and off the field. The discussion heated up in the past few days, until FIFA organizer Danny Jordaan told the BBC that he would only ban the vuvuzela ‘if there were ground to do so’, which for instance could be fans throwing the trumpet onto the pitch.

Today it was announced that the Vuvuzelas will be tolerated and NOT be banned as they were a huge part of the local culture. What is your opinion? Ban it or keep it?

GENERAL NEWS: R. Kelly performs the official song of the 2010 World Cup

R. Kelly’s new song is called “Sign of a Victory” and has been made the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Kelly is ready to add another trophy to his Grammy-award winning single from the Space Jam soundtrack back in 1996.

R. Kelly will perform the song at the opening ceremony on June 11th at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg together with the Soweto Spiritual Singers.

The Soweto Spiritual Singers is a 27 strong member vocal ensemble who perform very inspirational, joyous Gospel Music which will accompany Kelly’s soulful voice.

The official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album is called ‘Listen Up!’ and is bound to do good in this world: all proceeds from the song and album will benefit the official 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign and other African charities selected by the participating artists on the album.

Radio 2000 from South Africa is the ‘official station for the 2010 FIFA World Cup’, as stated on their website, and they are bound to play this song plenty of times in the next few weeks. Kick-off is next Friday so get in the mood by playing some Radio 2000 on your STREAMIUM.

GENERAL NEWS: Martin Scorsese to finish his documentary about George Harrison

Scorsese and Olivia Harrison, George’s wife, have been collaborating on a documentary about the famous songwriter & Ex-Beatle for the past three years and are finally nearing the end: ‘Living In The Material World: George Harrison’ is due to be released later this year.

“Harrison’s music and his search for spiritual meaning is a story that still resonates today and I’m looking forward to delving deeper,” Scorsese said in a statement. George Harrison was the so-called “quiet Beatle.” who sadly died of cancer in 2001 at the age of 58.

There is plenty of Beatles Stations on your Streamium, the best way to go about it is to search by genre and just type in ‘Beatles’ into your search bar. You will be amazed by the choice!
