Video of the Week: Homeless with a silky ‘Radio voice

A viral video about a homeless guy was all the rage for the past few days. Ted Williams, a former drug and booze addict, happens to have a “God-given gift of a voice”. He was filmed standing at a crossing and presenting his ultimate ‘Radio voice’ before the video was uploaded on Youtube and caused worldwide attention. Since then the video has gone viral and radio stations and voiceover agencies have scrambled to locate him. Tony Florentino, programme director of WNCI radio in New York, said: “We’re on pins and needles, I think he really has no idea how big this is going to be.”

Ted is set to appear on WNCI this week and is expected to be offered £7,000 for future voiceover work so there’ll be plenty of chances to listen to his unique, silky voice via your STREAMIUM. Just search for WNCI via the search function.

ABC, CBS and CNN, ESPN and MTV are also said to be trying to bag appearances from him. Could this really be from rags to riches? What do you think?

DISCUSS: Webradio vs Old School Radio

This week we’d like to know from you: Do you think AM/FM radio will sustain over the few decades? There was an interesting survey released by Edison Research this week, claiming that over the last ten years most young listeners have largely migrated to the ‘Net.

Internet streaming music services (a la STREAMIUM) have claimed a huge chunk of the radio listening market over the last decade..

According to the study, 20 % of consumers between 12 – 24 listened to Pandora online radio over the last month. One in three have at least tried the service. In comparison, only 6 % of the same cohort told Edison that they listened to online streams from AM/FM radio over the last week.

In 2000, only ten years ago, young listeners self-reported hung around on the Internet about one hour a day, while listening to terrestrial radio about two hours and 43 minutes a day.

This year that ratio more than reversed itself. Young media consumers now spend 2:52 every day on the Internet, and just 1:14 listening to radio. Only television watching comes close to on line use among this group: 2:47 a day. To check out the full outcome of the American Youth Study, pop over to Edison’s website.

RADIO NEWS: Radio is the ‘most trusted’ source of news

According to a report from Ofcom, a survey showed that Radio is the most trusted source of news, beating both TV and the internet. 66% of people considered radio to be reliable and accurate, compared with 58% for online, 54% for TV and just 34% for newspapers.

The survey also showed that twice as many people were using social networking sites like Facebook compared to 2007, rising to a 44%. More than half of all internet users said that being online increased their contact with friends and family and a whopping 91% of all adults are using mobile phones. The survey also showed that most people were still sceptical about the quality of information and news they found on the internet.

MUSIC NEWS: Jay Z’s Musical named ‘Fela!’ rules Broadway Tony Awards

The 2010 Tony Awards are about to go down on June 13^th, being the most important theatre prize in the entire world and this year it looks like Jay Z will be one of the big winners.

He collaborated on producing Fela! together with Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith.

The Broadway musical is about ’70s Nigerian musician and political activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and his controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician. His pioneering music has been used in the show which is a blend of jazz, funk and African Rhythm. It has scored 11Tony Award nominations so far and is bound to be the big winner of the night.

RADIO NEWS: German private radio stations broadcasting live from World Cup

Clear Channel Communications is at the top with 1.762.985.805 €  profit per annum. Clear Channel Radio is a leading radio company focused on serving local communities across the U.S. with an audience of more than 110 million listeners choosing Clear Channel Radio programming each week. One of the many stations they host is called Fox News Radio  which focuses on interesting facts from economics to politics over local concerns. GUNS ‘n ROSES headlining Reading Festival

Guns n Roses are headlining main stage in Reading Festival this year. This has already caused a sensation in the music scene as this is one of the most famous rock bands in the world and they haven’t been on stage for quite some time now. Their latest album ‘Chinese Democracy’ had cost more than 13 million dollars and taken over 12 years of work so fans were patiently waiting for a new release for over a decade.

 This band has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, including over 46 million in the United States. This summer they’ll be honoring us with a visit to Europe. BBC one is covering Reading Festival on air and is of course available on your Streamium. Check it out !

Internet Radio is a clear winner

Just last week, we posted about the widespread reach of your internet radio. A story by Audio Graphics further turns the interest in favor of internet radio. Gone are the days of concerns about internet radio royalty rates and buffering problems. Their survey shows an overall increase of 6.3% from 2005 to 2009 in the percentage of people who would like to listen to internet radio. Whereas, almost all other music listening options – broadcast radio, MP3 player, satellite radio etc saw a decline in interest. Interestingly, out of the female respondents, 66% favored internet radio over other options, up from 52% in 2005 – a 14% increase. The percentage of male respondents interested in internet radio rose by 5%. So not only do the music sites interest the ladies, as we posted earlier, but also internet radio stations catch their attention a lot.
