Grammies & BAFTA 2011

This Sunday is Grammy time! The 53^rd Grammy Awards will take place on 13^th of February 2011 at the Staples Center in L.A. This extremely sought after prize recognizes outstanding achievement in the music industry and it will be broadcast by CBS.

Rumour has it, that Gwyneth Paltrow will be singing a Country Song together with Cee Lo Green at the Award Ceremony. We’re not entirely sure about her being a singer now, but apparently she can keep up with her famous husband Chris Martin of Coldplay.

And here it comes: Mick Jagger will be performing for the first time at the Grammys, too! Other than that, you can expect performances by Eminem, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire and Katy Perry. Quite a nice line-up!

Also just around the corner: the BAFTAS. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts is the UK’s leading independent charity working with the film, television and video games industries and yes, they do have their own award.

This year’s celebration of the very best in film will take place on Sunday 13 February at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden and will also be broadcast via BBC 1 and BBC 3.

EVENT OF THE WEEK: Film Festivals Everywhere!

For all you B-Movie, Shortfilm and Cinema-loving folks out there: This week is jam packed with great Film Festivals and hopefully there’s one in your region too!

First we have the AFI Los Angeles International Film Festival – held at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood and other venues around Hollywood Boulevard. This is Los Angeles’ largest and most prominent film festival and it is on from November 4^th til 11^th.

From November 7^th to 13^th, the International Film and Video Festival of Beijing Film Academy is also opening their gates to the public. Visit the campus to enjoy numerous international documentaries, animated cartoons and short films, produced by students from all over the world. The aim of the festival is to encourage and support the next generation of Film and Television professionals.

Also the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival ends this Thursday (11^th). Fort Lauderdale is increasingly gaining recognition as one of the most important regional film festivals in the US. Now in its 25th year, The FLIFF will reel out over 200 films from around the globe.

To get you in the mood for cinematic highlights, check out the trailer for ‘Black Swan’ which will screen at the AFI this year. It is the latest film by Darren Aronofsky, who was also responsible for ‘Requiem for a dream’ and ‘The Wrestler’, and one of the most highly anticipated films of 2011. The thriller zeros in on the relationship between a veteran ballet dancer (Natalie Portman) and a rival (Mila Kunis). EVENT OF THE WEEK: Spider-Man Musical on Broadway

If you could pick one Superhero, which one would it be? We totally L-O-V-E Spiderman.

Bono and The Edge of Rock Band U2 did see the potential in Marvel Superhero Spiderman aka Peter Parker and brought him to Broadway by writing the music and the lyrics.

Tickets went on sale in September and this is bound to sell out quickly.

It has been given a date for the start of preview performances – Sunday, Nov. 14 – at Broadway’s newly renamed Foxwoods Theater. The show’s producers announced that they had also set an opening night, Tuesday, Dec. 21. The musical is estimated to have a budget of $50 million – the largest in Broadway history.

So does this get you tingly? We totally adore Spiderman – he was born a geek and overcame it to turn into the righteous force that is determined to destroy all evil. What a great story!

EVENT OF THE WEEK: Venice Film Festival

The Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica, better known internationally as the Venice Film Festival, is by far the oldest film festival still in existence today. The centre of the action is the Lido area in Venice and the very famous Palazzo del Cinema, but screenings take place at various cinemas across the city.

The festival was established in 1932, and after the Second World War, the event reflected the new climate of freedom of expression. Cinema makers of the Neo-realist school such as Rossellini and De Sica discovered more direct takes on reality which gave the lie to the glossy artificiality of Hollywood cinema, whilst also opening the way for visionaries like Fellini as well as influencing American film of the 1960s.

Being one of the three most influential film festivals in the entire world and this year you’ll be able to catch its 67^th birthday from September 1^st until the 11^th. Head of Jury this year is Quentin Tarantino and he will make sure the Gold Lion goes to the right person. If you’re into film, you should check out ‘film reviews’ on station KCRW 89.9. Joe Morgenstern, the Wall Street Journal’s Pulitzer Prize winning film critic, brings his wit and wisdom to bear on current releases of the film industry.

FILM NEWS: 80’s Comeback on Cinema Screens

It’s 1984 all over again at the movies. New this summer is a remake of the classic “The Karate Kid” with Jackie Chan starring as Kung Fu Master Mr. Han and Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith as 12-year old Dre Parker who is being bullied by a kung fu student, and must learn to stand up to him. Mr. Han then teaches him Kung Fu and turns him into ‘The Karate Kid’.

A film version of the 80s TV show “The A-Team.” also recently came out. Liam Neeson plays John ‘Hannibal’ Smith, Bradley Cooper is Ltd. Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck  and Jessica Biel stars as Captain Charisa Sosa. Of course B.A. Baracus will be there too!

Something else to look forward to: A sequel of 80’s sci-fi hit “TRON” is coming out this year in December. The story evolves around father (played by Jeff Bridges) and son, who embark on a life-or-death journey across a visually-stunning digital universe with no less than Daft Punk composing the film score.
