EVENT OF THE WEEK: World Cup Final & Closing Ceremony
Monday, July 12th, 2010
First of all we’d like to congratulate the lucky winner of the World Cup 2010. Spain did a great job throughout the competition and we are happy for them to score the cup for the first time in the history of football. The closing ceremony in ‘Soccer City’ Johannesburg was very emotional and flamboyant with 88000 visitors in the stadium and over a hundred million viewers at home as everyone knew it was time to say goodbye to four mad weeks of football.
Columbian Pop Icon Shakira performed the FIFA World Cup Song ‘Waka Waka’ as the Kick-off of the show. Then South African musician Stoan Seate wowed the viewers with his song ‘Sizodalala-la’ and a bunch of acrobats who formed a huge vuvuzela whose at first annoying sounds seemed to have been almost forgotten throughout the World Cup.
Things got emotional as Nobel Prize winner Nelson Mandela and his wife were driven through the stadion in a golf cart and also when host South Africa said its goodbyes in a stunning show involving elephants and traditional dances.
To top things off, the last performance of the night were Jozi, Slikour, Zuluboy, Theo Kgosinkwe, Nianell, Wouter, 2Face, Samini and Ihashi Elimhlophe singing ‘Sign of a Victory’ together which made the crowd bounce. It definately was a night to remember and now all eyes are on Brazil who will host the 2014 World Cup.
To celebrate with winning team Spain, we recommend a Spanish station for you today. Cadena Ser’s programme will be dominated today by the happiness of bringing the cup home for the first time. What a great way to start the week!
